Carlo Correra‘s latest book, “La nuova disciplina dei reati alimentari” (The New Framework for Food-Related Offences), published by Tecniche Nuove, has been released .
The book became necessary with the entry into force, on 29 May, of Law 75/2026, which added further special provisions to the already complex landscape of Italian food legislation.
As a result, new articles (517-sexies and 517-septies in the first instance) have been added to the current Criminal Code to provide for more specific penalties for “commercial fraud” when it relates to food, as well as for profiteering based on “misleading” claims.
“Ancillary” penalties have been strengthened, and the amounts of administrative fines have been significantly increased (up to €150,000).
Particular attention and rigour have been applied to the dairy sector and, even more so, to the buffalo milk sector. Finally, there is an extensive overhaul of fisheries legislation.
It is now up to public and private operators in the “agri-food” sector to test the effectiveness of this further legislative initiative in practice.
