World Food Safety Day is celebrated on June 7, promoted by the WHO and FAO to raise awareness of the importance of food safety for protecting health.
This year’s official theme is “From burden to solutions: safe food everywhere” to emphasize how having scientifically reliable data on foodborne diseases can help national authorities, food business operators, and consumers prioritize risks and make informed choices aimed at protecting health.
Five priority areas for action have been identified for this day:
- Ensuring safety — Governments must ensure universal access to safe and nutritionally adequate food;
- Producing safely — Farmers and food producers must adopt good production practices (GAP and GMP);
- Preserving safety — Supply chain operators must maintain effective food safety management systems;
- Knowing about safety — Consumers need adequate food education to make informed choices;
- Working as a system — Only through collaboration between all stakeholders can safe food be guaranteed everywhere.
