After bottles, strapping. The Coripet consortium is preparing to expand its scope of activities and extend the circular economy model developed in recent years for PET bottles to a new type of packaging: strapping – plastic strips used mainly in logistics, industry and distribution to secure packages, boxes and goods during transport and handling.
The expansion of operations, established by Ministerial Decree No. 315 of 30 September 2026, will enable manufacturers of PET and PP – polypropylene – strapping to join the Coripet system and benefit from an organised supply chain for the collection, recycling and production of secondary raw material, giving the strapping itself a new lease of life.
This development comes at a particularly significant time for the packaging industry. Since 12 August, the PPWR, the new European regulation on packaging and packaging waste, has been in force. It introduces progressively stricter requirements regarding recyclability and the use of recycled material.
The collection of used strapping will be mainly industrial in nature and will not be aimed at the general public. Strapping is, in fact, mainly used and accumulated in places where large quantities of goods pass through. The aim is to build a dedicated and traceable supply chain capable of collecting homogeneous streams of PET and PP strapping, sending them for recycling and making the recovered material available again for the production of new strapping.
