Recycling: O-I Italy is the first glass group to receive ReMade certification

Recognition of the highest level of recycled content for wine, oil, and beer bottles produced in Sicily, guaranteeing an authentic, traceable, and certified circular supply chain

O-I Italy has obtained ReMade certification for “oak”-colored products manufactured at its Marsala plant, becoming the first group in the glass industry to adopt this recycled content scheme—the only one recognized within the European accreditation system coordinated by EA (European cooperation for Accreditation).

The certification applies to the O-I plant in Marsala—the only glass manufacturing site in Sicily—and covers product lines for wine, oil and beer. Following the certification process conducted by TÜV SÜD, the plant achieved an “A+” rating — the highest level under the certification scheme — guaranteeing a recycled glass content of 90% or higher in the bottles produced.

The ReMade Class A+ certification aligns with the direction and principles of the “Cento per Cento Sicilia” (100% Sicily) project, launched by O-I years ago to support the island’s wine supply chain.

The Sicilian model is based on a short, circular supply chain in which glass sorted by the island’s residents is collected and processed before entering the O-I plant in Marsala as raw material. There, the cullet is melted down to create new bottles composed of over 90% locally sourced recycled glass. Finally, through collaboration with regional producers, the containers are distributed according to a virtuous local circular economy principle.

“Achieving ReMade Class A+ certification for our Marsala plant is a source of great pride and confirms the tangible nature of our commitment to sustainability“, commented Giuseppe Giaramita, Director of the O-I Marsala plant. “Being the first in the glass industry to reach this milestone demonstrates that, for O-I, the circular economy is a measurable, traceable, and rigorous industrial model. This achievement shows how collaboration among citizens, the recycling supply chain, industry, and local producers can generate tangible environmental and economic value for the region“.
