Its platforms can operate either as dedicated ERP systems or integrate seamlessly with existing software. Thanks to direct connectivity with production equipment, they enable real-time data acquisition and support Industry 4.0 manufacturing models. The company’s goal is to transform administrative obligations into tools for operational control, efficiency, and competitiveness. Who is J-Software?
«J-Software was founded with a clear vertical focus: designing management and telematics solutions for industries subject to excise and customs regulations, an area in which we are now the Italian market leader. Our journey in the brewing sector began in 2009. We were true pioneers, the first company in Italy to develop a complete range of software and services dedicated exclusively to breweries, and especially to craft breweries. How does integration with the production process and data acquisition work? Which communication protocols do you support, and how do you ensure traceability for determining excise-duty quantities?
«Native integration between the production floor and administrative management lies at the core of our ecosystem. We have developed proprietary Industry 4.0 technology that is both flexible and bidirectional, enabling communication with virtually any production equipment available on the market – from brewhouses and fermentation vessels to packaging lines, including bottling, kegging, and canning systems. Our J-BEER ERP platform natively supports the main industrial communication standards, including OPC UA, Modbus/TCP, Siemens S7, ODBC, and virtually any API. The workflow is fully automated: J-BEER sends the production order to the equipment, specifying beer type, batch number, and planned production volume. Once production is complete, it automatically retrieves and archives the actual process data returned by the machinery, including production volumes, processing times, temperatures, and even wort volumes measured by digital flow meters. This completely eliminates manual data entry and the risk of human error. The quantities used to determine excise duty are generated directly on the production line and remain mathematically secured and immutable throughout the entire process, ensuring complete and indisputable traceability in the event of inspections».
How does the solution manage the electronic registers required by the Italian Customs and Monopolies Agency (ADM) for tax warehouses and small breweries? Are automatic consistency checks available?
«J-BEER was specifically designed to eliminate the administrative complexity associated with the Italian Customs and Monopolies Agency (ADM) and the Ministry of Agriculture (MASAF). The software provides integrated and transparent management for both large breweries operating under Tax Warehouse status and small craft breweries benefiting from reduced-duty schemes for annual production below 10,000 hectolitres. Our real innovation lies in our proactive approach. Through the Brewmatic operational dashboard, users are guided step by step while the system performs real-time consistency checks between raw materials loaded into production, recorded production volumes, actual tank inventories, and the data required for customs declarations. Excise calculations, generation of electronic submission files such as ALCOMB and ALCODA, and management of statutory registers all draw directly from production data. In addition, with just a few clicks, the system manages both the issuance and receipt of electronic transport documents – including e-AD, DAS, EU DAS, and MVV-E -effectively removing administrative barriers from logistics while ensuring full regulatory compliance».
How are other process data acquired and processed? Does the system support mass balance calculations and monitoring of process losses?
«Absolutely. This is where regulatory data become a strategic management asset. Through integration with the fermentation and conditioning cellar, J-BEER continuously captures and records production parameters, automatically generating fermentation charts – including temperature, density, and process duration – for every individual batch. This level of detailed information allows us to configure accurate mass balances for every production stage, from the brewhouse through fermentation, filtration, and packaging. Monitoring discrepancies between theoretical and actual production volumes enables both brewmasters and management to identify and quantify technical losses and production waste with exceptional precision. The software therefore provides complete visibility into raw material yields and plant efficiency, directly improving profitability and operational sustainability».
How do you address the specific needs of microbreweries with limited automation and restricted budgets? Can the platform be considered scalable?
«This is probably the challenge we care about most, and it has defined the community-oriented nature of the J-BEER project from the very beginning. We have always rejected the idea that Industry 4.0 technologies and advanced ERP systems should be reserved exclusively for multinational companies. J-BEER is a modular and inherently scalable platform designed to grow together with each brewery.
