Buffalo milk supply chain: decree signed for the unified milk registry

The Registry will acquire and link data regarding the movement of buffalo milk and its derivatives, enabling the tracking of flows across the various stages of the supply chain

The Minister of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forestry, Francesco Lollobrigida, has signed the implementing decree—mandated by Law 75/2026—establishing a single registry for the movement of buffalo milk and its derivatives.

The new traceability system, integrated into the National Agricultural Information System (SIAN), will collect and correlate data on the movement of buffalo milk and its derivatives, making it possible to track flows across the various stages of the supply chain.

The system will also be interoperable with the National Livestock Registry, allowing for the cross-referencing of herd size information with declared production data. Parties using imported milk or derivatives will be required to declare this in the registry. Furthermore, the registry will distinguish between milk flows destined for Mozzarella di Bufala Campana PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) production and those intended for other products, thereby ensuring that the PDO cheese is made exclusively from milk meeting the specifications set out in the product regulations.
