Pesticide residues: only 1.2% non-compliance in 2024

The Ministry of Health’s report has been published. The samples primarily concern fruit and vegetables, cereals, oil and wine, meat, and milk and dairy products

The Ministry of Health has published the report on official controls on pesticide residues in food for 2024.
11,188 samples were taken (1,252 on import and 9,936 domestically), and 135 samples were found to be non-compliant, equal to 1.2%.
The sampling covers:

  • 53.6% fruit and vegetables (5,997 samples)
  • 14.6% cereals (1,636 samples)
  • 10.3% oil and wine (1,155 samples)
  • 7.6% meat (856)
  • 4.6% milk and dairy products (513)
  • 2.3% eggs and egg products (253)
  • 0.85% baby food (95 samples)
  • 0.8% fish
  • 0.68% honey
  • 4.6% other products

9,079 samples are of Italian origin, 378 are of European origin, 1,690 are from third countries, and the origin of 41 is unknown.
6.5% of the samples (726) are organic, and 9.9% (1,104) were samples taken following previous non-compliance.
59.5% of the samples were residue-free, while 39.3% contained residues within the limits established by Regulation (EC) 396/2005.
The percentage of irregular fruit and vegetable samples was 1.4%, with 85 samples. The number of residue-free samples was 2,612 (43.5%), while the number of samples with residues within the legal limit was 3,300 (55%).
Regarding the cereal results, 18 samples (1.1%) of the 1,636 samples were found to be non-compliant. Furthermore, 67.5% of the samples were residue-free, while 31.4% contained residues within the limits.
Only 0.8% of the oil and wine samples were found to be non-compliant, equal to 9 samples. The percentage of samples free of residues was 66%, and that of samples with residues within the legal limits was 33.2%.
The baby foods tested were all found to be compliant, and only four samples had residues within the legal limits.
Finally, no non-compliance was found in milk, fish and honey.
