Protection Consortia: a ministerial decree has been published

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forestry has published Decree ref. no. 264637 of 3 June 2026. Among the new features is the possibility of setting up consortia dedicated to multiple geographical indications, including those belonging to different supply chains

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forestry has published Decree ref. no. 264637 of 3 June 2026, containing “General provisions on the establishment and recognition of Protection Consortia for protected designations of origin and protected geographical indications of agricultural products and foodstuffs pursuant to Regulation (EU) 2024/1143 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 11 April 2024″.

Among the new features:

  • in addition to the traditional activities of protection, promotion and supervision of the Consortia, there is the regulation of supply, the promotion of tourism linked to PDOs and PGIs and the adoption of voluntary forms of environmental, economic and social sustainability of production;
  • with regard to the requirements for the recognition of Consortia and representativeness in corporate bodies, the criteria for three-year confirmation have been redefined with differentiated thresholds for specific supply chains;
  • the possibility of establishing Consortia dedicated to multiple geographical indications, including those belonging to different supply chains.

“With this decree,” said the Minister of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forestry, Francesco Lollobrigida, “we are strengthening and modernising the role of the Protection Consortia, taking an important step forward for the promotion, sustainability and protection of Italian products with geographical indications”.
