The day, established by the National Association of Grappa Tasters, will be celebrated every March 5th

Today marks the first International Grappa Day, established by the National Association of Grappa Tasters (ANAG). The Istituto Tutela Grappa del Trentino has issued a statement highlighting the value of the supply chain, specifically that of Grappa del Trentino IG, the distillate with a geographical indication (GI) that it aims to protect and promote.

“Grappa del Trentino PGI – states Alessandro Marzadro, president of the Institute – is much more than a product: it is the result of a deep connection with the territory, with its raw materials—the pomace—with skills passed down over time, and with rigorous production regulations designed to ensure transparency, traceability, and high quality standards. This strict set of rules, shared and respected by producers, protects consumers while simultaneously enhancing the work of Trentino distilleries.” “Having a solid history and rigorous regulations – he continues – means guaranteeing quality, identity, and credibility. This daily commitment protects serious producers and guarantees the certainty of an authentic product, a true expression of our territory,” qualified by a mark of origin: the trident with the words “Trentino Grappa.”

Founded in 1960, the Istituto Tutela Grappa del Trentino has 24 members, representing almost all of Trentino’s production. As already noted, it is responsible for protecting and promoting the production of Grappa del Trentino PGI, obtained exclusively from pomace produced in Trentino. “Every year,” the Institute states, “approximately 7,500 hectoliters of grappa are produced in Trentino (10% of the national total in 70cl bottles), equivalent to approximately 2.5 million bottle-equivalents, distilling 13,000 tons of grape skins. Three main types of grappa are produced: those from white and aromatic grapes, which make up 60% of the total, and those from red grapes, which covers the remaining 40%.
