The use of aspartame-acesulfame salt<\/strong> (E 962<\/strong>) as a food additive is safe at current exposure levels. This is the conclusion<\/a> reached by the European Food Safety Authority<\/strong> (EFSA<\/strong>), following the re-evaluation of this sweetener <\/strong>used in various foods and beverages with no added sugar<\/strong> or with reduced energy content<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once ingested, E 962 dissociates into its components aspartame<\/strong> (E 951<\/strong>) and acesulfame K<\/strong> (E 950<\/strong>). EFSA experts have not found any safety problems associated with the uses and levels of use of these last two either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The European Food Safety Authority’s conclusion is based on the acceptable daily intake (ADI<\/strong>) for aspartame,<\/strong> previously set at 40 mg\/kg<\/strong> body weight per day and now reconfirmed, as well as on the ADI for acesulfame K<\/strong>, recently revised to 15 mg\/kg <\/strong>body weight per day. The current exposure estimates for all age groups remain below these ADIs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

EFSA makes two recommendations<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
