{"id":238386,"date":"2026-06-22T15:42:09","date_gmt":"2026-06-22T13:42:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.alimentibevande.it\/uncategorized\/diossine-e-pcb-diossina-simili-stabilita-una-nuova-dose-tollerabile\/"},"modified":"2026-06-22T15:51:07","modified_gmt":"2026-06-22T13:51:07","slug":"dioxins-and-dioxin-like-pcbs-a-new-tolerable-intake-has-been-established","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.alimentibevande.it\/en\/food-safety\/dioxins-and-dioxin-like-pcbs-a-new-tolerable-intake-has-been-established\/","title":{"rendered":"Dioxins and dioxin-like PCBs: a new tolerable intake has been established"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The <strong>European Food Safety Authority<\/strong> (<strong>EFSA<\/strong>) <a href=\"https:\/\/efsa.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.2903\/j.efsa.2026.10103\">has established<\/a> a new <strong>tolerable weekly intake<\/strong> (TWI) <strong>of 0.6 picograms per kilogram <\/strong>of body weight per week for combined exposure to <strong>dioxins and dioxin-like PCBs.<\/strong> This value, determined using the World Health Organisation\u2019s (WHO) 2022 toxic equivalency factors (TEFs), is <strong>three times lower than the TWI established in 2018<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dioxins and dioxin-like PCBs are persistent environmental contaminants that accumulate in the food chain and are found mainly in <strong>foods of animal origin<\/strong>, particularly milk and dairy products, meat and fish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The health-based reference value identified by EFSA is based on effects on male reproductive development and is supported by evidence derived from both animal studies and human data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The European Food Safety Authority has found that dietary exposure among the European population exceeds the new TDI across<strong> all age groups<\/strong>, with the <strong>highest exceedances observed in children and adolescents<\/strong>. It therefore recommends:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>developing <\/strong>TEFs that are more relevant to humans;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>further <strong>improving <\/strong>toxicokinetic models for humans;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>collect <\/strong>more data on contamination levels in plant-based foods;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>collect <\/strong>further data on the presence of these substances in human milk and blood, from a wider range of European countries.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Taking into account the EFSA\u2019s findings, the European Commission and the EU Member States will draw up <strong>dietary guidelines<\/strong> and <strong>review the existing maximum levels<\/strong>, whilst also taking into account the revised
