It is measured on the ability of the product system to build meaning, differentiation and industrial consistency. In this scenario, packaging is no longer a technical support, but a strategic infrastructure that connects production, brand and market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gentlebrand.com\/\">Gentlebrand<\/a><\/strong>, part of the Tetra Laval Group, designs packaging for fast-moving consumer goods. <em>Andrea Rizzardi, Director of Gentlebrand<\/em>, explains: \u00ab<em>These products are commodities, much more so than any other product. And they are inseparable from their packaging, their &#8216;clothing&#8217;, both for logistical reasons and, increasingly, for reasons of differentiation\u00bb. <\/em>In a world of qualitatively similar products, packaging becomes the distinguishing factor that the customer sees, encounters and touches. Rizzardi adds: <em>\u00abIf the product is, by definition, replicable, the packaging system becomes the first element of differentiation. And this, for a manufacturer, is not a formal issue, it is first and foremost a change in the industrial paradigm<\/em>\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">From factory to brand, from brand to language<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To understand the current role of packaging, we need to look at the evolution of the brand. Rizzardi observes: \u00ab<em>In the early 20th century, the factory dominated. The value was in the production itself. In the 1990s, the concept of the brand as a guarantee of quality became established. Today, the brand has surpassed both dimensions: it not only certifies, it interprets. It does not merely distinguish, it expresses. The brand has become a non-verbal language<\/em>\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Packaging enters this scenario as a semiotic tool, as a device of meaning. It is the first tangible object that conveys a message. The choice on the shelf is no longer just a comparative assessment of price and performance. It is an act of identity. \u00ab<em>It has been scientifically proven that emotions play a key role in the selection of anything we buy<\/em>\u00bb, observes Rizzardi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This requires a leap in design quality. It is not enough to design a &#8216;premium&#8217; container. It is necessary to define a code that is consistent with the target audience and competitive positioning. &#8216;Premiumness&#8217; is not an aesthetic effect, it is the consistency of a system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Customised packaging: consistency as a method<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The definition of &#8216;<strong>tailor-made packaging<\/strong>&#8216; does not refer to a refined aesthetic but to a design method. The sartorial inspiration is a metaphor for precision: each project stems from an analysis of the competitive context, the target audience, cultural expectations and production conditions. \u00ab<em>It is no longer just about aesthetics; a beautiful container is no longer enough. We need a container that is linguistically consistent with the target audience<\/em>\u00bb, emphasises Rizzardi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The concept is not a creative exercise detached from production. It must already integrate a high percentage of engineering. This reduces the buck-passing between design, printer and production. Packaging, in this logic, is industrially feasible design: creativity that takes into account filling lines, capping pressures, material compatibility, regulations and recovery chains. The difference is not stylistic, it is structural.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A concrete example is <strong>Gentlebrand&#8217;s ZELDA Smartweight project<\/strong>, in which lightening is not simply a matter of removing material, but of redesigning the structural stresses of the bottle. The weight is optimised without compromising stability, performance along the supply chain and perceived quality on the shelf. It is designed sustainability, not declared sustainability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sustainability: beyond the good material\/bad material dichotomy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For a company that deals with packaging, the debate on the sustainability of materials is inevitably central. Rizzardi states: \u00ab<em>The contemporary debate tends too much towards simplification: &#8216;good&#8217; and &#8216;bad&#8217; materials have been identified. But the interpretation cannot be so trivialising, because sustainability is something extremely complex<\/em>\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rizzardi offers a different interpretation of the issue: \u00ab<em>There is a suitable material for every project, the technology with the least impact for the product I am dealing with, depending on the individual case. There is no such thing as absolutely good or bad. More specifically, the issue is not to demonise PET or glorify compostable materials. It is to evaluate shelf life, compatibility with recovery chains, costs and systemic impact. A seemingly virtuous material can generate new critical issues if introduced in massive quantities into ecosystems that are not prepared to absorb it<\/em>\u00bb. From this perspective, sustainability is an exercise in balancing performance, the industrial system and the ecosystem in which the product is distributed and consumed. It cannot be reduced to a mere question of perception.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even in terms of differentiation, technical consistency becomes part of the value. Gentlebrand&#8217;s B-ALPHA project, for example, demonstrates how innovation can take place on the surface of the container through a three-dimensional surface structure obtained with advanced printing processes.
